Mansion Global: Think of light fixtures as ‘large-scale jewelry,’ says designer Scott Richler
Scott Richler started out as a jewelry designer—though now he makes rooms sparkle as the founder of lighting and furniture company Gabriel Scott.
He founded the company in 2012 in Montreal after his years of working in fashion, architecture and designing bespoke furniture. It was through Richler’s experience in architecture that he learned his clients were hungry for bespoke furniture and light fixtures. As he put it, lighting is “like large-scale jewelry.” “Design has to be made of careful attention to what it is you’re trying to execute and a respect for the materials,” he said. “As a result, craft is very important.”
Today, his lighting design has two showrooms, in New York and London. His lighting design can be found in the homes of celebrities like Drake and Kylie Jenner, and many of the pieces are made of long, straw-like iridescent glass. It’s what he calls “vertical chandeliers.” His most recent glass collection is inspired by century-old Venetian glassmaking traditions.
The Canadian designer, who is based in London, England, spoke to Mansion Global about his favorite jewelry, bespoke lighting and why he loves kitchens.
