Project Overview / What was the project brief?
My newest project in Manhattan's prestigious 111 West 57th Street building transforms a sky-high living room into a luxurious oasis. Capitalizing on the panoramic city views through expansive windows, the design utilizes a calming blue theme with an elegant accent pattern. Subtle touches, including sculptural elements and statement contemporary artwork, reflect the client's personality. This chic space offers a unique blend of stunning design and breathtaking cityscapes, creating an exceptional living experience.
What Gabriel Scott items did you specify for this project & why?
The Gabriel Scott Harlow Dried Flowers chandelier is a thoughtful marriage of modern and natural elements. Its motif introduces a touch of organic beauty into a contemporary interior space without disrupting its clean lines. The design cleverly reinterprets floral elements into an architectural form, echoing the structured lines of the surrounding buildings while offering a subtle nod to the breathtaking Central Park vista.
This piece embodies my design approach for the space: a contemporary deco aesthetic that seamlessly integrates nature's beauty into the home environment. Just as the natural elements of water and sky are on the exterior of the 111 W 57, the Harlow Dried Flowers chandelier acts as an interior floral complement within the space.
Did you customize these pieces to work with the project? If so, how?
This dining room design breaks new ground with the use of two standard Harlow Dried Flowers chandeliers by Gabriel Scott. While these sculptural fixtures are stunning on their own, my decision to use them in a pair marks a bold departure from tradition.
The placement of the chandeliers side-by-side creates a powerful, central element that transcends mere illumination. By taking a non-repetitive organic motif and transforming it into a physical statement, the "Dried Flowers" chandeliers become more than just lighting; they add a unique, enriching layer to the space.
This unconventional approach redefines the role of lighting in interior design. The standard Harlow Dried Flowers design, in its elegant simplicity, allows for this innovative use, creating a focal point that is both functional and visually striking.
What do you look for in furniture when specifying for a project?
When specifying furniture for a project, I prioritize pieces that seamlessly integrate with the overall design concept and material finishes. Inspiration plays a key role, but I ensure the chosen pieces also prioritize comfort and functionality. This balance between aesthetics and practicality is crucial for creating a space that's both beautiful and livable.
How do you use lighting to elevate the spaces you design?
Creating a truly memorable dining experience for our private client requires us to focus on every detail. This includes not just the beautiful table settings, but also the thoughtful use of lighting to create a specific atmosphere that reflects their individual style.
Gabriel Scott's lighting fixtures, known for their artistic design, go beyond simply illuminating the space. They become a key element that sets the mood and contributes to the unique character of each private dining room. While the food takes center stage on the table, the captivating lighting overhead truly sets the tone for the evening. Our personalized approach ensures a perfect blend of culinary artistry and an ambiance unique to the client.
What was your favorite part of designing this project?
111 West 57th Street serves as a potent reminder of New York City's unique relationship with nature. The juxtaposition of the ultra-modern skyscraper with the sprawling greenery of Central Park highlights the profound impact a visual connection to nature can have on interior design.
This project has reignited my passion for incorporating elements that bridge the gap between the built environment and the natural world. While I always appreciate the opportunity to curate beautiful artwork within a space, 111 West 57th Street inspires me to go a step further and introduce design elements that directly reference the surrounding nature, creating a more holistic and impactful experience.
