Interviews
We had the pleasure of speaking to Abby Gruman about one of her recent residential projects, Demarest Residence, located in New Jersey, USA. This family home mixes traditional elements with contemporary furniture and lighting, featuring our decorative Luna Chandelier and striking Harlow Pendants.
As principal of her own design studio, Abby Gruman has garnered a specific niche of clients on the East Coast. With close attention to detail, Abby uses her vivid sense of space and eclectic style to create a vision for her clients based on their goals and inspirations. She has reimagined various spaces using her inherent love of fashion, design, and architecture and is able to create an inviting room scheme that feels sentimental through the combination of modern trends and inherited pieces.
GS: Why did you chose these lighting pieces for this project?
AG: We chose the Luna due to its size in length and glass beads. We wanted to choose something different and unique and loved the idea of adding in purple glass. The Harlow pendants are so chic and can make any space feel modern and luxe - we love the shape and wanted to modernize the farmhouse style kitchen.
GS: How did you customize these pieces to work with the project?
AG: We chose the black finish on the Harlow to add in a more modern feel to the space, we love how the black pops off the white cabinets. For the Luna, adding in the purple glass beads felt special and unique and complemented the space.
GS:Do you often select items that you can customize for your projects?
AG: Yes, always. Each space is so different in scope, shape, and size. I always like to change up my designs for each client, everyone should have a unique one of a kind space!
GS: What do you look for in lighting when specifying for a project?
AG: I believe lighting should make a statement, when you walk into the space it should be the first thing you notice.
GS: What was your favorite part of designing this space?
AG: The kitchen really needed some bold elements to make it feel more like my client. When she bought the house the kitchen was already designed with white cabinets so we wanted to add in some features that felt young, fresh, modern, and chic.
