Emma Montgomery Design is based in Brooklyn, New York. Founded in 2021, the studio specializes in custom, full-home renovation and furnishing projects, and works closely with homeowners to develop high-quality designs.

Emma believes that a creative and empathetic approach to every client’s vision is key to delivering an excellent design service. The studio works with clients in New York City, the East Coast, and beyond.

The owners of this magnificent 1850s brick townhouse in Brooklyn Heights called for the remodeling of several key areas of their home. We came up with a new paint, lighting, and furnishing scheme to breathe some new life into the parlor floor. The result is a bright and warm space perfect for entertaining and gathering with family.

What Gabriel Scott items did you specify for this project & why?

We aimed to create a showstopping moment in the main living space when selecting our Gabriel Scott pieces, and we certainly found such a moment in using the custom Myriad chandelier and Dean coffee table. The living room is visible from the street when approaching the townhouse and is the first thing you see when entering the home. The elegant, jewel-like fixture complements the historic architecture as well as the more contemporary furnishings. The Myriad chandelier and Dean coffee play off of each other beautifully and come together to create a stunning focal point in the space.

How did you customize these pieces to work with the project?

We knew the chandelier needed to be a particular shape and size to fit seamlessly within the room, and Gabriel Scott was the perfect partner for this endeavor. They were collaborative, open to customizations, and made sure the proportions were right. Working together, we designed a completely custom Myriad chandelier and adjusted the size of the Dean coffee table to work within the scale of the space.

What do you look for in furniture/lighting when specifying for a project?

Every project is different. We work with our clients to create a unique design story for each home that complements the existing architecture and the clients’ lifestyles and personalities. Once we have established the feel of the project and the clients’ needs, we source pieces that fit within our concept while emphasizing functionality and beauty.

How do you use lighting to elevate the spaces you design?

Lighting truly brings a room to life. We like to add many layers of lights to make a room feel warm and lived in. A beautiful chandelier creates a strong focal point and provides a wonderful opportunity for a sculptural moment.

What was your favorite part of designing this project?

It was inspiring to work on such a beautiful, historic property in one of my favorite neighborhoods in New York. The building itself is extraordinary and it was an honor to design the spaces within to highlight its architectural gems. Our clients were a pleasure to work with and have a deep appreciation for high-quality art and design, making this project an absolute treat to bring to life.
