Gabriel Scott's latest lighting series Welles Reimagined is a finalist in the Lighting category at the 2023 HD Awards, presented by Hospitality Design magazine.
The Welles Reimagined lighting series is a design collaboration between lighting studio Gabriel Scott and six global designers - David Rockwell, Kelly Hoppen, CBE, Alessandro Munge, Michelle Gerson, Sybille de Margerie and Guan Lee.
The series sees each designer reinterpret Gabriel Scott’s most iconic fixture, the Welles chandelier. Material, scale, color and form were all reconsidered to create six new lighting capsule collections.
David Rockwell’s interpretation celebrates the Welles’ geometric form, while creating a contemporary light fixture inspired by botanic forms to create an organic assemblage. The hollowed glass polygons act as metallic light points that come together at varying heights and dimensions to form a floating light cluster.
Crafted from white clay and complemented by Gabriel Scott’s signature metal finishes, Kelly Hoppen’s capsule collection has been scaled down from the Welles’ original size to create an elegantly delicate aesthetic.
Infused with dynamic and bold fashion references inspired by rhythmic dance, Alessandro Munge deconstructed and rebuilt the Welles using a new support system. The beautiful jewel-like connecting bracket and the fixture’s radically different volume make Munge’s piece a true statement piece.
Michelle Gerson turned to nature to add a floral element that represents growth and bloom, alluding to a rebirth of a classic design. This uplifting and joyful design is handmade using alabaster white glass and a choice of metal hardware finishes.
As a contrast to the sharp metal and glass silhouette of the original design, Sybille de Margerie’s interpretation reveals the feminine side of the designer’s signature style. Couture-inspired, the collection shows a gradient composition from emptiness to full, with a variation of hollow and plain shapes using vegan leather.
Guan Lee’s interpretation is made from POLiROCK, a fired clay that has unique characteristics, somewhere between ceramic and rock. It appears natural but is made by recycling manufacturing waste. A completely custom piece made to order for each project.
The HD Awards, presented by Hospitality Design magazine, celebrates the best of the best in projects and products, and honors the creative teams behind them. The 2023 jury-selected winners will be announced in June during a ceremony in New York, and all winners and finalists will be showcased in the magazine’s May/June issue.
